Early Miocence brackish-water Mollusca from the eastern Mediterranean and from the Central Paratethys - A faunistic and ecological comparison by selected faunas

Journal of the Czech Geological Society, volume 46 (2001), issue 3-4, 353 - 374

  Abstract

Aquitanian (Early Miocene) brackish-water Mollusca from Agapi within the Grevena-Basin (Mesohellenic Trough, Greece) are investigated with special reference to the early ontogenetical shells and their paleoecological and systematic implications. Comparison to the Karpatian (Late Early Miocene) fauna of the Korneuburg Basin (Central Paratethys, Austria) is carried out. Relations to further localities of the Eastern Mediterranean and of the Central Paratethys, and the temporal and spatial shift of the brackish-water assemblages are discussed. The new taxa Agapilia gen. nov. (Neritidae), Greveniella mesohellenica gen. et sp. nov. (Rissoidea), Agapibittium greveniense gen. et sp. nov. (Cerithiidae) and Cymia hellenica sp. nov. (Muricidae) are introduced.
