  Abstract

A recently found letter by Joachim Barrande to Daniel Oehlert, Laval, dated May 12, 1882 contains important data concerning Barrande's opinion of the variability of taxa of his new genus, Praenatica. It shows his bright thinking, based on enormous knowledge of the Bohemian Lower Palaeozoic fauna, and his modern palaeontological approach, often lacking in works of his successors.
